Acuity Sensor Test Fixture

SolidWorks Rendering

This fixture needed to be designed to test the rotational repeatability of a theta motion stage (see Force Gauge Test Fixture for another fixture that tested this part).

Project Summary and Design Steps:

  • Designed a base plate in SolidWorks to be compatible with the available acuity sensor

  • Created and dimensioned a drawing of the plate part with DFM principles

  • Chose of the shelf parts and assembled the fixture on SolidWorks to confirm dimensions before physically assembling the fixture

  • Developed a python code to enable the sensor to pick up data at the right rate and in the right units

Troubleshooting and Results:

  • Had to try a few versions of the code because it would read a nonsense value if the sensor was out of range

  • Also had to increase the precision of the values the code produced because the part rotated in very small increments

  • Figured out how to add a marker flag to the part being tested so that it could be sensed

  • Designed and 3D a printed chip holder to attach this flag to

  • Tested the acuity sensor program on an existing machine to ensure that the code worked properly
